Fallout 3: Tweaks
To apply the following game-improving tweaks find the Fallout.ini and FalloutPrefs.ini files in "C:\....\Documents\My Games\Fallout3" folder. If the game is installed and the files are not there it means you haven't activated "FalloutLauncher.exe" yet. Doing so will create the ini files for you.
Fallout.ini
[General]
bUseThreadedAI=1 iNumHWThreads=2 bLoadFaceGenHeadEGTFiles=1 |
;Find the first setting and change it from 0 to 1 and add the second second line. These two settings keep the game from crashing when using Windows 7 64-bit and may improve reliability on other operating systems. These settings are now automatically added by the Updated Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch and do not need to be added manually. ;Add this line to fix the "pale face" bug that causes NPC face textures to appear lighter in tone than the body texture. |
FalloutPrefs.ini
[Grass]
iMinGrassSize=40 |
;Change to 40 to increase volume of grass. For use with Flora Overhaul mod.

4GB Patch
If you have a 64-bit Windows operating system (x64) then you need to download and apply this handy little patcher to the FO3 executable. By doing so it will allow the program to access 4GB of system memory instead of the default limit of 2GB. This will allow you to use more mods without causing the game to run out of virtual memory, resulting in drastic reductions in framerates and eventual freezes/crashes. I prefer this patch for its simplicity but read on for an alternative that includes support for 3GB use on 32-bit systems.
Large Address Aware Enabler for FO3
Similar to the patch above, this collection of files gives users with 32-bit systems the ability to make FO3 use 3GB of RAM instead of the default of 2GB. As it's more involved, I will refer you to a helpful video by Gopher that covers this patch and how to apply it.
